Day 42 – Hot vs. Cold

Chemistry 1 – We began to model the differences between solids, liquids and gasses.  First we did a brainstorming activity about the spacing, potential for movement, and filling of a container for the particles in each state of matter.  I then did the above demo.  I dropped blue food coloring into an ice cold beaker of water and red food coloring into a heated beaker of water.  We observed the coloring for several minutes.  The second demo dealt with gasses.  I sprayed a can of body spray in one area of the room.  When students smelt the scent they raised their hand.

Physics 1 – We began defining force as an interaction between two objects and types of forces.  This kind of goes against the modeling ideals, but with the word force and misconceptions about what a force is and the types of forces I want the students to all “speak the same language.”

Chemistry 2 – Groups whiteboarded practice problems dealing with acids and bases.
